Dominican American Wins NY Senate Seat

CaribWorldNews, QUEENS, NY, Thurs. Mar. 18, 2010: A second generation migrant from the Dominican Republic is the newest member of the New York State Senate.

José R. Peralta was elected in a landslide to the New York State Senate in a special election, outpolling Hiram Monserrate 65 percent to 27 percent and Republican Robert Beltrani with 8 percent.

Monserrate was expelled from the New York State Senate after being convicted of assaulting his girl friend.

`Tonight we put an end to dysfunction,` Peralta told a crowd at a restaurant in East Elmhurst in District 13, which includes the Queens neighborhoods of Corona, East Elmhurst, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights and Woodside. `Our nightmare is over.`
