Detained Haitian Couple Released To Bury Daughter

CaribWorldNews, MIAMI, FL, Fri. Aug. 28, 2009: Baby Luana Augustin will finally be laid to rest by her parents.

Some three months after her death by drowning, the 8-month-old is set to be buried after U.S. immigration officials released her detained parents, Luscene Augustin and Chandeline Leonard.

The release comes following pleas from advocates who argued it was inhumane to keep the baby in the morgue and not allow the parents to simply make funeral arrangements and bid farewell.

Luana died by drowning while being brought on an overcrowded boat illegally into the U.S. Her parents survived but the baby girl was swept away to her death near Boynton Beach, Florida.

Meanwhile, immigration authorities say Augustin and Leonard can now apply to become permanent residents of the U.S.
